Bring cash to Mama’s, since they don’t accept credit cards (nor reservations). But that’s the way it has been at this North Beach landmark since 1951…so why change now? They open at 8 a.m., but there’s often a line of diners outside by 7 a.m., including fans of the super M’Omelettes, as they’re called. With 10 delicious ones to choose from, it’s not so easy. All omelets are served with house made grilled potatoes and toast, an English muffin or sourdough baguette. Popular choices include the Dungeness crab with avocado and brie, farmers omelet and Northern Italian omelet.

Follow the aroma of fresh ground coffee and look for the line on the corner outside this breakfast and brunch place in Lower Pacific Heights. It’s worth the wait. The two most popular omelets are the Hass Omelette with avocado, bacon, Monterey Jack cheese, and a side of pico de gallo and the Herbi Omelette with mixed mushrooms, tomatoes, arugula, shallot, and cucumber wasabi cream. A medley of potatoes and ciabatta bread are served on the side. In crab season, look for the Bay Bottom Omelette with fresh Dungeness crab, scallion, spinach, lemon, Swiss American and parmesan. Others swear by Asparagus Blackston Omelette with millionaire’s bacon, scallion, asparagus, parmesan, Meyer lemon hollandaise. Why not wash your heavenly breakfast down with a mimosa?

Good news. One of San Francisco’s very best places (and best prices) for breakfast offers 14 different omelets — and all of them are three-egg. Most of the omelets contact cheese, although there are two options for those who prefer no cheese: the vegetarian with mushroom, onion, bell pepper, spinach and zucchini or the Florentine with spinach, tomato and drizzled with hollandaise sauce. All omelets all served with your choice of hash browns, sliced tomatoes, or organic mixed greens. About three blocks from Union Square, hotel-based out-of-town convention delegates have sussed this tiny place with the big menu place out; if there’s a wait, the line moves quickly. They’re open at 7 a.m. seven days a week.

Patience! The wait can be closer to two hours than one. Best value and best breakfast are the reasons why this uber-popular place has held onto her crown in a less than salubrious neighborhood since opening in 1993. Opening time is 7:30 a.m. except on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when they’re closed. Featured omelet is the open-faced Southwestern, with andouille sausage, mushrooms, onions, peppers and Jack cheese, plus home fries, salsa and tortillas on the side. The three-egg omelet is made to order with your choice of add-ons. Check the chalkboard for daily specials and save room for Dottie’s outstanding breads, pastries, muffins and scones, as they’re all made from house recipes right on the premises.

Is Kitchen Story on your radar for home style cooking? The out-of-the-ordinary news is that they do take reservations. Six omelets are on the breakfast and brunch menus, each served with rainbow potatoes and a pretty special tasting house basil cheddar biscuit. KS’s Own Omelet Breakfast receives a lot of attention as a signature dish that’s fluffy and moist containing pork wine sausage, lemon grass, asparagus, bell peppers and soy sauce. Others are partial to the mushroom omelet with hollandaise and a side of fruit. The omelets go great with fresh squeezed orange juice or a bloody mary.
