London-based beauty vlogger Em Ford has tens of thousands of followers on her YouTube account My Pale Skin, wherein she gives beauty tips and tricks to young women. Her videos have netted millions of views and taught countless people about applying makeup.

Unfortunately, not all her viewers are the nicest people.

As she explains in this recently-posted video, Ford is often a victim of beauty-shaming, both relating to wearing makeup and to not wearing makeup (Ford has adult acne, like millions of adults across the world).

The video, which begins with Ford sans makeup, displays comments she has received on her recent videos. Phrases like, “You look disgusting” and “WTF is wrong with her face?” float around her, until she applies her beauty techniques, eventually finishing with her in full makeup. However, as she finds out, even wearing cover up and mascara angers people too, and culls accusations of trickery and claims that she’s still “ugly.”

In her most recent video, called “You Look Disgusting”, Ford wanted to point out this hypocrisy of the opinions facing women regarding appearance.

“I wanted to create a film that showed how social media can set unrealistic expectations on both women and men,” she wrote on her blog. “One challenge many face today, is that as a society, we’re so used to seeing false images of perfection, and comparing ourselves to unrealistic beauty standards that It can be hard to remember the most important thing – You ARE beautiful.”
