(CBS SF) – A clothing company in Indonesia has apologized for instructions on a t-shirt that tells women to clean it because “it’s her job,” but critics are saying the apology is also sexist.
Photos of a shirt made by Salvo Sports circulated on social media over the weekend, just in time for International Women’s Day on Sunday. The shirt’s cleaning instructions read, “Give this jersey to your woman, it’s her job.”
On Sunday, Salvo apologized in a series of tweets in Indonesian, saying in part, “The message is simply, instead of washing it in the wrong way you might as well give it to a lady because they are more capable.”
Reaction to the clothing company’s statement on Twitter was swift:
According to the BBC, the shirt was made for the Indonesian Super League soccer team Pusamania Borneo.
