Rihanna was honored as the Fashion Icon of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America last night (June 2), and the see-through dress she showed up in made it transparent why she deserved the honor.
The get-up, designed by Adam Selman, was mesh and inlaid with 230,000 Swarovski crystals and topped with her signature do-rag.
“We definitely wanted to make it a little bit scandalous. The dress is just fishnet and crystals and a couple of fingers crossed. But fashion is about beauty, and the [female] body is part of that,” Selman told Style.com.
Mel Ottenberg, Rihanna’s stylist since her catapult onto the high fashion scene in 2011, confirmed that the dress had been in formulation since the MTV Movie Awards and that it was down to the wire in being completed for her appearance that evening.
“I would say at least eight people worked nonstop from 8 p.m. last night to 3 p.m. today putting on the finishing touches,” Ottenberg told Style.com.
